ತ್ರಿಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ
( ಗಂಗಾವತರಣಮು )

ದೇವ ದೇವೇ ಗತೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸೋಂಗುಷ್ಠಾಗ್ರನಿಪೀಡಿತಾಮ್ |
ಕೃತ್ವಾ ವಸುಮತೀಂ ರಾಮ ಸಂವತ್ಸರಮುಪಾಸತ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಮ ! ದೇವ ದೇವೇ ಗತೇ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ವಸುಮತೀಂ ಸೋಂಗುಷ್ಠಾಗ್ರನಿಪೀಡಿತಾಮ್ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಸಂವತ್ಸರಮ್ ಉಪಾಸತ |

Oh Rama ! After the creator went away , Bhagiratha performed penance for one year standing on top of his toes.

ಊರ್ಥ್ವ ಬಾಹುರ್ನಿರಾಲಂಬೋ ವಾಯುಭಕ್ಷೋ ನಿರಾಶ್ರಯಃ |
ಅಚಲಃ ಸ್ಥಾಣುವತ್ ಸ್ಥಿತ್ವಾ ರಾತ್ರಿಂದಿವಮರಿಂದಮ ||

ಸ|| (ಸಃ) ಅರಿಂದಮ ಊರ್ಧ್ವ ಬಾಹುಃ ನಿರಾಲಂಬೋ ನಿರಾಶ್ರಯಃ ವಾಯುಬಕ್ಷಃ ಸ್ಥಾಣುವತ್ ಸ್ಥಿತ್ವಾ ಅಚಲಃ ಆಸೀತ್ |

The king who can defeat all enemies performed penance with outstretched hands standing still without moving, without any support and with only air as his food.

ಅಥ ಸಂವತ್ಸರ ಪೂರ್ಣೇ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕನಮಸ್ಕೃತಃ |
ಉಮಾಪತಿಃ ಪಶುಪತೀ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ಸಂವತ್ಸರ ಪೂರ್ಣೇ ಉಮಾಪತಿಃ ಪಶುಪತೀ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕ ನಮಸ್ಕೃತಃ ರಾಜಾನಂ ಇದಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ |

After one year the Lord Siva who is paid obeisance to by all and who is known as Umapti then spoke to the king.

ಪ್ರೀತಸ್ತೇsಹಂ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ತವಪ್ರಿಯಮ್ |
ಶಿರಸಾ ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಶೈಲರಾಜಸುತಾಮಹಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ನರಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ತೇ ಅಹಂ ಪ್ರೀತಃ | ತವ ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ | ಅಹಂ ಶೈಲರಾಜ ಸುತಾಂ ಶಿರಸಾ ಧಾರಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ |

"Oh Best of men! I will fulfill your wish. I will bear the daughter of the king of mountains on my head".

ತತೋ ಹೈಮವತೀ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕನಮಸ್ಕೃತಾ |
ತದಾ ಸಾತಿ ಮಹದ್ರೂಪಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ವೇಗಂ ಚ ದುಸ್ಸಹಮ್|
ಆಕಾಶಾದಪತತ್ ರಾಮ ಶಿವೇ ಶಿವಶಿರಸ್ಯುತ ||

ಸ|| ತತಃ ಸಾ ಜ್ಯೇಷ್ಠಾ ಹೈಮವತೀ ಸರ್ವಲೋಕ ನಮಸ್ಕೃತಾ ತದಾ ದುಸ್ಸಹಂ ವೇಗಂ ಚ ಮಹತ್ ರೂಪಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಶಿವ ಸುರಸ್ಸು ಆಕಾಶಾತ್ ಅಪತತ್ |

Then Ganga ,the eldest daughter of Himavan , who is respected by all fell from the sky with full force on to the head of Lord Siva.

ಅಚಿಂತಯಚ್ಛ ಸಾ ದೇವೀ ಗಂಗಾ ಪರಮದುರ್ಧರಾ |
ನಿಶಾಮ್ಯಹಂ ಹಿ ಪಾತಾಳಂ ಸ್ರೋತಸಾ ಗೃಹ್ಯ ಶಂಕರಮ್ ||
ತಸ್ಯಾವಲೇಪನಂ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಸ್ತು ಭಗವಾನ್ ಹರಃ |
ತಿರೋಭಾವಯಿತುಂ ಬುದ್ಧಿಂ ಚಕ್ರೇ ತ್ರಿಣಯನಸ್ತದಾ ||
ಸಾ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಪತಿತಾ ಪುಣ್ಯಾ ಪುಣ್ಯೇ ರುದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ|
ಹಿಮವತ್ಪ್ರತಿಮೇ ರಾಮ ಜಟಾಮಂಡಲ ಗಹ್ವರೇ ||
ಸಾ ಕಥಂಚಿನ್ಮಹೀಂ ಗಂತುಂ ನಾಶಕ್ನೋದ್ಯತ್ನಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಾ |
ನೈವ ನಿರ್ಗಮನಂ ಲೇಭೇ ಜಟಾಮಂಡಲ ಮೋಹಿತಾ ||
ತತ್ರೈವಾಬಂಭ್ರಮದ್ದೇವೀ ಸಂವತ್ಸರಗಣಾನ್ ಬಹೂನ್ |
ತಾಮಪಸ್ಯನ್ ಪುನಸ್ತತ್ರ ತಪಃ ಪರಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಃ ||

ಸ|| ಸಾ ಪರಮದುರ್ಧರಾ ದೇವೀ ಗಂಗಾ ಸ್ರೋತಸಾ ಗೃಹ್ಯ ಶಂಕರಮ್ ಪಾತಾಳಂ ಹಿ ನಿಶಾಮ್ಯಹಂ (ಇತಿ) ಅಚಿಂತಯಚ್ಚ |ಭಗವಾನ್ ಹರಃ ತಸ್ಯ ಅವಲೇಪನಂ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧ ಅಸ್ತು. ತದಾ ತ್ರಿ ನಯನಃ ತಸ್ಯ ತಿರೋಭಾವಯಿತುಂ ಬುದ್ದಿಂ ಚಕ್ರೇ | ಹೇ ರಾಮ ! ರುದ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪುಣ್ಯೇ ಮೂರ್ಧನಿ ಹಿಮವತ್ಪ್ರತಿ ಜಟಾಮಂಡಲ ಗಹ್ವರೇ (ಅಸ್ತಿ) ಸಾ ( ಗಂಗಾ) ಪುಣ್ಯಾ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಪತಿತಾ |ಸಾ ಮಹೀಂ ಗಂತುಂ ಕಥಂಚಿನ್ ಯತ್ನಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಾ ನ ಸಕ್ನೋತಿ| ಜಟಾಮಂಡಲಮೋಹಿತಾ ನ ನಿರ್ಗಮನಮ್ ಏವ |(ಸಾ) ದೇವೀ ತತ್ರ ಏವ ಬಹೂನ್ ಸಂವತ್ಸರ ಗಣಾನ್ ಬಂಭ್ರಮತ್ | ತಾಂ ಅಪಸ್ಯನ್ ( ಭಗೀರಥಃ) ಪುನಃ ತತ್ರ ತಪಃ ಪರಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಃ |

Then Ganga thought that with the unbearable force of her flow she will carry Lord Sankara too to the nether world. Bhagavan Sankara realized the thoughts of Ganga and became very angry. The three eyed one then decided to teach her a lesson. O Rama ! the head of Lord Siva with its hair equalled in complexity the Himalayan mountains with its caves. The auspicious Ganga fell into that labyrinth. However much she tried she could not get out to reach the earth. She was unable to come out of the labyrinth of Sivas head. Ganga was stuck in that going round and round for years. Seeing that the king Bhagiratha again started his penance.

ಅನೇನ ತೋಷಿತಶ್ಚಾಭೂತ್ ಅತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ರಘುನಂದನ |
ವಿಸಸರ್ಜ ತತೋ ಗಂಗಾಂ ಹರೋ ಬಿಂದು ಸರಃ ಪ್ರತಿ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಘುನಂದನ ! ಅನೇನ ಅತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ತೋಷಿತಶ್ಚ ಅಭೂತ್ | ತತಃ ಹರೋ ಗಂಗಾಂ ಬಿಂದುಸರಃ ಪ್ರತಿ ವಿಸಸರ್ಜ |

' Oh Raghunandana ! Lord Siva pleased with the penance then released Ganga into the Bindu Sarovar'.

तस्यां विशृज्यमानायां सप्त स्रोतांसि जज्ञिरे ।
ह्लादिनी पावनीचैव नळिनी तथाs परा ॥
तिप्रः प्राचीं दिशं जग्मुः गंगा शिवजला श्शुभाः ।
सुचक्षुश्चैव सीता च सिंधुश्चैव महानदी ॥
तिस्रस्त्वेता दिशं जग्मुः प्रतीचीं तु शुभोधकाः ।
सप्तमी चान्वगात् तासां भगरथमथोनृपम् ॥

स॥ तस्यां विश्रुज्यमानायां सप्त स्रोतांसि जज्ञिरे ! ह्लादिनी पावनी च नळिनी एव शुभाः शिवजलाः गंगा प्राचीं दिशं जग्मुः । अपरः तिप्रः सुचक्षुः सीता सिंधुश्च महानदी शुभोदकाः एता तिस्रस्तु प्रतीचिं जग्मुः । अथ तासां सप्तमी भगीरथं नृपम् अन्वगत् च ।

'Thus released Ganga split into seven rivers. The the auspicious Ganga waters in the form of rivers Hladini, Pavani, Nalini moved east. The three rivers Suchakshu, Sita and Sindhu moved west . the seventh river followed Bhagiratha.'

भगीरथोsपि राजर्षिः दिव्यं स्यंदनमास्थितः ।
प्राये दग्रे महातेजाः गंगा तं चाप्यनुव्रजत् ॥

स॥ राजर्षिः भगीरथः अपि दिव्यं स्यंदन आस्थितः । प्रायेत् अग्रे गंगा तं महातेजाः च अनुव्रजत् ।

'The saint King move on a chariot. With that great man in the front river Ganga followed him'.

गगनात् शंकरशिरः ततो धरणि माश्रिता ।
व्यसर्पत जलं तत्र तीव्र शब्द पुरस्कृतम् ॥
मत्स्य कच्छप संघैश्च शिंशुमारगणैस्तदा ।
पतद्भिः पतितैश्चान्यैः व्यरोचत वसुंधरा ॥
ततो देवर्षि गंधर्वा यक्षासिद्धगणास्तदा ॥
व्यलोकयंत ते तत्र गगनाद्गां गतां तथा ।
विमानैर्नगरकारैः हयैर्गजवरैस्तदा ।
पारिप्लवगतैश्चापि देवतास्तत्र वीष्ठिताः ॥

स॥ गगनात् शंकर शिरः ततः धरणीं आश्रिता जलं तीव्र शब्द पुरस्कृतम् व्यसर्पत ।मत्स्य कच्छप संघैश्च शिंशु मारगणैः तदा पतद्भिः पतैताश्चान्यैः वसुंधरा व्यरोचत ।ततः देवर्षि गंधर्वा यक्ष सिद्ध गणां तदा गगनात् गां गतां ( गंगां) व्यलोकयंत ।नगरकारैः विमानैः हयैः गजवरैः तदा परिप्लवगतैश्च अपि देवताः तत्र वीष्टिताः ।

'Then Ganga falling down from the skies on to the head of Siva and then from Siva's head to the earth flowed speedily making roaring noise. The Ganga flowing with fish, tortoise, and crocodiles added lustre to the earth. Then the legions of Devas , Suras Rishis, Gandharvas Yakshas Siddhas looked on in awe as the Ganga moved from heaven to earth. They were sitting on planes as big as cities , horses, elephants etc'.

तदद्भुततमं लोके गंगापतनमुत्तमम् ।
दिदृक्षवो देवगणाः समीरमितौजसः ॥
संपतद्भिस्सुरगणैः तेषां चाभरणौजसा ।
शतादित्य मिवाभाति गगनं गततोयदम् ॥
शिंशुमारोरगगणैः मीनैरपि च चंचलैः ।
विद्युद्भिरिव विक्षिप्तं आकाशं अभवत्तदा ॥

स॥ तत् अद्भुततमं उत्तममं गंगापतनं लोके दिद्रुक्षवो देवगणाः समीरमितौजसः ।सुरगणैः संपतद्भिः तेषां आभरणौजसा च गत तोयदं गगनं शतादित्य मिवाभाति । चंचलैः शिंशुमारोरगणैः मीनैः अपि आकाशं विद्युद्भिरिव विक्षिप्तं अभवत् तदा।

'The legions of Devas got together to see the arrival of Ganga on the earth. The light from the jewels worn by the assembled Suras lighted the skies. And the skies bereft of clouds looked like it was lighted up by hundreds of Suns. With the movement of fish and crocodiles across the sky, it looked like sky was lighted up by lightning'.

ಪಾಂಡರೈಸ್ಸಲಿಲೋತ್ಪೀಡೈಃ ಕೀರ್ಯಮಾಣೈಃ ಸಹಸ್ರಥಾ |
ಶಾರದಾಭ್ರೈರಿವಾಕೀರ್ಣಂ ಗಗನಂ ಹಂಸ ಸಂಪ್ಲವೈಃ ||
ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ದ್ರುತತರಂ ಯಾತಿ ಕುಟಿಲಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದಾಯತಮ್ |
ವಿನತಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದುದ್ಭೂತಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ಯಾತಿ ಶನೈಃ ಶನೈಃ ||
ಸಲಿಲೇನೈವ ಸಲಿಲಂ ಕ್ವಚಿದಭ್ಯಾಹತಂ ಪುನಃ |
ಮುಹುರುರ್ಧ್ವಮುಖಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಪಪಾತ ವಸುಧಾತಲಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಪಾಂಡರೈಸಲಿಲೋತ್ಪೀಡೈಃ ಕೀರ್ಯಮಾಣೈಃ ಗಗನಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಥಾ ಸಂಪ್ಲವೈಃ ಶಾರದಾಭ್ರೈಃ ಆಕೀರ್ಣಂ ಮಿವ ( ಅಸ್ತಿ) | ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಉದ್ಧ್ರುತತರಂ ಯಾತಿ ಕ್ವಚಿದ್ ಆಯತಂ ಕುಟಿಲಂ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ವಿನತಂ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಉದ್ಭೂತಂ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಯಾತಿ ಶನೈಃ ಶನೈಃ (ಚಲತಿ) |ಸಲಿಲೇನೈವ ಸಲಿಲಂ ಮುಹುಃ ಊರ್ಧ್ವಮುಖಂ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಅಭ್ಯಾಹತಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಪುನಃ ಪಪಾತ ವಸುಧಾತಲಮ್ |

'The white foam of the jumping waters made the sky looked like it is full of groups of swans flying and the monsoon clouds .The Ganga following Bhagiratha was flowing sometimes with much vigor, some times with many crooked turns, some times in a wider flow and some time slowly. The water waves falling on each other and again moving up then falling on earth'.

ತಚ್ಛಂಕರಶಿರೋಭ್ರಷ್ಟಂ ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಂ ಭೂಮಿತಲೇ ಪುನಃ |
ವ್ಯರೋಚತ ತದಾ ತೋಯಂ ನಿರ್ಮಲಂ ಗತಕಲ್ಮಷಮ್ ||
ತತ್ರ ದೇವರ್ಷಿ ಗಂಧರ್ವಾ ವಸುಧಾತುಲವಾಸಿನಃ |
ಭವಾಂಗ ಪತಿತಂ ತೋಯಂ ಪವಿತ್ರಮಿತಿ ಪಸ್ಪೃಶುಃ ||
ಶಾಪಾತ್ ಪ್ರಪಿತಾ ಯೇ ಚ ಗಗನಾದ್ವಸುಧಾತಲಮ್ |
ಕೃತ್ವಾ ತತ್ರಾಭಿಷೇಕಂ ತೇ ಬಭೂವುರ್ಗತಕಲ್ಮಷಾಃ ||
ಧೂತಪಾಪಾಃ ಪುನಸ್ತೇನ ತೋಯೇ ನಾಥ ಸುಭಾಸ್ವತಾ |
ಪುನರಾಕಾಶಮಾವಿಶ್ಯ ಸ್ವಾನ್ ಲೋಕಾನ್ ಪ್ರತಿಪೇದಿರೇ ||
ಮುಮುದೇ ಮುದಿತೋ ಲೋಕಃ ತೇನ ತೋಯೇನ ಭಾಸ್ವತಾ |
ಕೃತಾಭಿಷೇಕೋ ಗಂಗಾಯಾಂ ಬಭೂವ ವಿಗತಕ್ಲಮಃ ||

ಸ|| ತತ್ ಶಂಕರ ಶಿರೋ ಭ್ರಷ್ಠಂ ಪುನಃ ಭೂಮಿತಲೇ ಭ್ರಷ್ಠಂ ತದಾ ತೋಯಂ ಗತ ಕಲ್ಮಷಂ ನಿರ್ಮಲಂ ವ್ಯರೋಚತ | ಭವಾಂಗ ಪತಿತಂ ತೋಯಂ ಪವಿತ್ರಂ ಇತಿ ದೇವರ್ಷಿ ಗಂಧರ್ವಾ ವಸುಧಾತುಲವಾಸಿನಃ ತತ್ರ ಪಸ್ಪೃಶುಃ |ಗಗನಾತ್ ವಸುಧಾತಲಂ ಶಾಪಾತ್ ಪ್ರಪಿತಾ ಯೇ ಚ ತತ್ರ ಅಭಿಷೇಕಂ ಕೃತ್ವಾ ಗತ ಕಲ್ಮಷಾಃ ತೇ ಬಭೂವುಃ |ಅಥ ತೋಯೇನ ಸುಭಾಸ್ವತಾ ತೇನ ಪುನಃ ಧೂತ ಪಾಪಾಃ ಆಕಾಶಮಾವಿಶ್ಯ ಪುನಃ ಸ್ವಾನ್ ಲೋಕಾನ್ ಪ್ರತಿಪೇದಿರೇ | ಗಂಗಾಯಾಂ ಅಭಿಷೇಕೋ ಕೃತ ವಿಗತ ಕ್ಲಮಃ ತೇನ ತೋಯೇನ ಭಾಸ್ವತಾ ಲೋಕಃ ಮುದಿತೇ ಮುಮುದೇ |

' The waters of Ganga first falling on the head of Siva and then falling on the earth were shining brightly without any dirt. the Devas Gandharvas and all the residents of earth took the waters falling from the head of Siva as auspicious preformed the rituals with those waters. Those falling from the heavens to earth because of curse, bathed in those waters and became free of the curse. Brightened by the waters of Ganga and freed from the curse they entered the skies again and went back to their regions. Bathing in Ganga the people became free of stress and became joyful'.

ಭಗೀರಥೋsಪಿ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಸ್ಯಂದನ ಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಃ |
ಪ್ರಾಯಾದಗ್ರೇ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ತಂ ಗಂಗಾ ಪೃಷ್ಠತೋsನ್ವಗಾತ್ ||

ಸ|| ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ಭಗೀರಥಃ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಅಪಿ ಸ್ಯಂದನಂ ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ ತಂ ಅಗ್ರೇ ಪ್ರಾಯಾದ್ | ಗಂಗಾ ಪೃಷ್ಠತೋ ಅನ್ವಗಾತ್ |

'As that powerful king Bhagiratha moved on in his chariot Ganga too followed him closely.

ದೇವಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ಷಿಗಣಾ ಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ದೈತ್ಯ ದಾನವರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ |
ಗಂಧರ್ವಯಕ್ಷಪ್ರವರಾಃ ಸಕಿನ್ನರ ಮಹೋರಗಾಃ ||
ಸರ್ವಾಶ್ಚಾಪ್ಸರಸೋ ರಾಮ ಭಗೀರಥ ರಥಾನುಗಾಮ್ |
ಗಂಗಾಮನ್ವಗಮನ್ ಪ್ರೀತಾಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ಜಲಚರಾಶ್ಚಯೇ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಮ ! ಭಗೀರಥ ರಥಾನುಗಾಂ ಗಂಗಾಂ ಅನ್ವಗನ್ ದೇವಾಃ ಋಷಿಗಣಾ ಸಹ ದೈತ್ಯ ದಾನವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾಃ ಗಂಧರ್ವ ಯಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರವರಾಃ ಕಿನ್ನರೈಃ ಸಹ ಮಹೋರಗಾಃ ಅಪಿ , ಅಪ್ಸರಸಾಃ ಸರ್ವಾಃ ಚ ಜಲಚರಾಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವೇ ಪ್ರೀತಾಃ ||

' Oh Rama the Devas, Rishis along with Daityas, Danavas, Rakshasa, Gandharvas, Yakshasa and Kinneras and all the beings that move in water were delighted and they too followed the chariot of Bhagiratha'.

ಯತೋ ಭಗೀರಥೋ ರಾಜಾ ತತೋ ಗಂಗಾ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ |
ಜಗಾಮ ಸರಿತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾ ಸರ್ವ ಪಾಪವಿನಾಶಿನೀ ||
ತತೋ ಹಿ ಯಜಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಜಹ್ನೋರದ್ಭುತ ಕರ್ಮಣಃ |
ಗಂಗಾ ಸಂಪ್ಲಾವಯಾಮಾಸ ಯಜ್ಞವಾಟಂ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ||
ತತೋ ದೇವಾಃ ಸಗಂಧರ್ವಾ ಋಷಯಶ್ಚ ಸುವಿಸ್ಮಿತಾಃ |
ಪೂಜಯಂತಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಜಹ್ನುಂ ಪುರುಷಸತ್ತಮಮ್ |
ಗಂಗಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ ನಯಂತಿ ಸ್ಮ ದುಹಿತೃತ್ವೇ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ||
ತತ ಸ್ತುಷ್ಟೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಶ್ರೋತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಅಸೃಜತ್ ಪುನಃ |
ತಸ್ಮಾಜ್ಜಹ್ನುಸುತಾ ಗಂಗಾ ಪ್ರೋಚ್ಯತೇ ಜಾಹ್ನವೀತಿ ಚ ||

ಸ|| ಯತೋ ಭಗೀರಥೋ ರಾಜಾ ತತೋ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನೀ ಸರಿತಾಂ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠಾ ಪಾಪವಿನಾಶನೀ ಗಂಗಾ ಜಗಾಮ | ಜಹ್ನೋ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಕರ್ಮಣಃ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ತಸ್ಯ ಯಜಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಯಜ್ಞವಾಟಂ ಗಂಗಾ ತತಃ ಸಂಪ್ಲಾವಯಾಮಾಸ |ಹೇ ರಾಘವ ! ತಸ್ಯ ಅವಲೇಪನಂ ಜ್ಞಾತ್ವಾ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೋ ಯಜ್ವಾ ಸರ್ವಂ ಗಂಗಾಯಾಃ ಜಲಂ ಪರಮಾದ್ಭುತಂ ಅಪಿಬಚ್ಚ|ತತಃ ದೇವಾಃ ಗಂಧರ್ವಾ ಸಹ ಋಷಯಃ ಚ ಸುವಿಸ್ಮಿತಾಃ ಜಹ್ನುಂ ಪುರುಷಸತ್ತಮಮ್ ಮಾಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಪೂಜಯಂತಿ | ಗಂಗಾಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ದುಹಿತೃತ್ವೇ ನಯಂತಿ ಸ್ಮ |ತತಃ ತುಷ್ಠೋ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಶ್ರೋತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ಅಸೃಜತ್ ಪುನಃ | ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಗಂಗಾ ಜಹ್ನು ಸುತಾ ಜಾಹ್ನವೀ ಇತಿ ಚ ಪ್ರೋಚ್ಯತೇ |

' Ganga , the most auspicious and destroyer of sins went wherever king Bhagiratha went. Then Ganga flowed over the hermitage of venerable sage Jahnu and the sacrificial hall was submerged. Seeing this as the arrogance of Ganga and thus angered , the venerable sage drank up all the waters of Ganga. Then the Devas, Rishis and Gandharvas wonder struck at the event worshipped the venerable sage. They made Ganga as his daughter. The pleased venerable sage then let the Ganga out through his ears. Since she became the daughter of the sage Jahnu she is also known as Jahnavi.

ಜಗಾಮ ಚ ಪುನರ್ಗಂಗಾ ಭಗೀರಥ ರಥಾನುಗಾ |
ಸಾಗರಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ಸಾ ಸರಿತ್ಪ್ರಾವರಾ ತದಾ |
ರಸಾತಲಮುಪಾಗಚ್ಛತ್ ಸಿದ್ದ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮಣಃ ||
ಭಗೀರಥೋ ಪಿ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ಗಂಗಾಮಾದಾಯ ಯತ್ನತಃ |
ಪಿತಾಮಹಾನ್ ಭಸ್ಮಕೃತಾನ್ ಅಪಶ್ಯತ್ ದೀನಚೇತಸಃ ||

ಸ|| ಪುನಃ ಗಂಗಾ ಭಗೀರಥಾನುಗಾ ಜಗಾಮ ಚ ಸರಿತ್ ಪ್ರವರಾ ಸಾಗರಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ |ತದಾ ತಸ್ಯ ಕರ್ಮಣಃ ಸಿದ್ದ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ರಸಾತಲ ಮುಪಾಗಚ್ಚತ್ |ಗಂಗಾಮಾದಾಯ ಯತ್ನತಃ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ಭಗೀರಥಃ ಅಪಿ ದೀನ ಚೇತಸಃ ಭಸ್ಮಕೃತಾನ್ ಪಿತಾಮಹಾನ್ ಅಪಸ್ಯತ್ |

There after Ganga again followed Bhagiratha. The best of all rivers then finally reached the ocean too. To complete the task of Bhagiratha the Ganga then entered the underground regions. Bhagiratha who with stupendous effort brought Ganga to earth was also dispirited when he saw the ashes of his forefathers'.

ಅಥ ತದ್ಭಸ್ಮನಾಂ ರಾಶಿಂ ಗಂಗಾಸಲಿಲಮುತ್ತಮಮ್ |
ಪ್ಲಾವಯದ್ದೂತ ಪಾಪ್ಮಾನಃ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ರಘೂತ್ತಮ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ತತ್ ಭಸ್ಮನಾಂ ರಾಶಿಂ ಉತ್ತಮಂ ಗಂಗಾ ಸಲಿಲಂ ಪ್ಲಾವಯತ್ ! ರಘೋತ್ತಮಾ ದೂತಪಾಪ್ಮಾನಃ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಂ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ |

'Then the auspicious waters of Ganga immersed the ashes there upon the forefathers freed of all sins attained heaven'.

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಬಾಲಕಾಂಡೇ ತ್ರಿಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶ ಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||
